Debunking Gas Fireplace Myths

By December 16, 2025January 12th, 2026News

Gas fireplaces are often seen as “low-maintenance,” and while that’s true compared to wood-burning fireplaces, there are several common myths that can unintentionally harm your fireplace performance, efficiency, and safety. Today, we’re here to debunk those myths.

Myth #1: “If the flame looks good, everything must be fine.”

Gas fireplaces can develop internal issues long before the flames visually change. A dirty pilot assembly, dust-clogged air inlets, or a weakening thermocouple may not be obvious until the fireplace shuts down unexpectedly. Routine cleaning of the pilot and air inlets with compressed air to rid of debris will help keep these components working, while a visual inspection for cracks or discoloration of the thermocouple can help you foresee issues.

Myth #2: Gas fireplaces don’t need professional cleaning “because nothing burns or leaves ash.”

While there is no wood or soot from combustion, dust, hair, airborne debris, and environmental residue can settle onto burners, into pilot assemblies, and across air passages. As these accumulate, the flame quality can shift, oxygen mixing can change, and performance degrades. Modern gas fireplaces, especially those with advanced technologies like GlowFire® log sets, benefit from regular seasonal cleaning to keep them performing beautifully. Myth #3: “You can move the logs however you want, they’re just decorative.

With realistic log sets, this is absolutely not the case. The logs are positioned intentionally to shape the flame path, ensure clean burning, and provide proper oxygen flow. Moving a log, even by an inch, can block flame ports, disrupt the burn pattern, or create soot buildup. Every gas log arrangement is engineered for a reason — it’s both functional and artistic.

Myth #4: “If it’s vent-free, it doesn’t need inspection because it’s self-regulating.”

Vent-free units contain highly sensitive ODS (Oxygen Depletion Sensor) safety technology, which monitors oxygen levels. Dust near the ODS pilot or small alterations in airflow can affect its performance. At Grand Canyon Gas Logs, every vent-free system is independently certified and individually tested before shipping; continued care at home ensures that the ODS continues doing its job for the life of the unit.

Myth #5: “A stronger gas smell or dusty odor when starting up is nothing to worry about.”

A faint odor when first turning on a unit can be normal, especially after long periods of inactivity, but persistent or increasing odor is never something to ignore. It may indicate incomplete combustion, a gas fitting that needs tightening, or a burner that needs cleaning. If you are experiencing increased gas order, immediately turn the gas supply off and call a gas professional to inspect your gas fireplace.

Myth #6: “Maintenance is expensive, so I’ll wait until something goes wrong.”

Preventative care is always easier, safer, and far more cost-effective than reactive repair. Something as simple as having a technician clean and inspect the unit once a year can ensure that the logs remain properly placed, the flame burns cleanly, and the system operates as designed.

Gas fireplaces are clean, efficient, safe, and reliable when cared for properly. A well-maintained fireplace doesn’t just heat the room, it brings calm, ambiance, and confidence into the heart of your home.
